Shoots of Crepe Myrtals sprouting over lawn :(

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Just ID'd the runners I have sprouting through my St. Augustine backyard. Crepe Myrtals! Is there anyway to rid myself of this without killing both sod and weed? Or do I have to start fresh and lay all new sod you think? It's funny, it's a prevalent shrub/tree for the area but neither I nor neighbor on that side it's on have any.

It's not the worst weed to have. It stays level with the lawn as it grows between mowings and it's the same texture as the Augustine with thick round runners and leaves but it's got a red hewn to it and it's obviously a "weed" amongst this green patch of lawn.

Or is this ID not even correct? It sure looks identical to the shoots I saw branching off a chopped down myrtal which still had a trunk left in the ground, looks the same as what I have BUT mine aren't growing from a trunk, rather in a spider web form across the yard.

Suggestions?

A picture might help, but keep mowing them.

That doesn't sound like the crape myrtle volunteers that I get. Mine are straight shoots. I get a few each year even though there was alot of mature crapes in the area. The leaves are green not red.

I'd post some pictures in the ID forum--it doesn't sound like typical crape myrtle behavior to me either.

Yes I decided the same. My shoots are not upright, figured since they get mowed down. But they are reddish/green like the shoots I see on crepes that have been cut down, trunk intact. Will have to find ID forum, wasn't sure where to post.

Thank-you!
