The daytime temperatures have been in the mid ninties to 100+ range for weeks, so I pick what veggies I can early each morning before I leave for work.
The days are getting shorter, and soon I will not be able to see what I'm doing.
I was thinking of buying a lamp that will fit around my head (I call them miners head lamps.)
I thought one of y'all might have a brand that you could recommend.
Thanks.
Gardening in the dark - where can I buy a head lamp, please
I bought one from LL Bean for my DH to use whilst carrying deer out of the woods, but it was expensive, and he hasn't used it yet so I don't know how well it works.
I got mine at Outdoor Provisions but I think I could have gotten for less money elsewhere.
It does have the high intensity halogen and a few other light settings (the idea was to divert the bugs by using a different color light) (it doesn't work that way tho!!) (but it 'sounded' like a great idea!!)
Thanks for the input :)
I didn't think about the light attracting insects - I'm usually dressed for work when I'm on the prowl - don't want to take critters to work with me.
I don't mind them so much when I'm "properly" dressed (shorts & tee shirt)
It is very hot here (north Texas) and I also like to do gardening tasks (watering, pruning) after dark. I have a couple of head lights made by Black Diamond that work good for garden chores as well as hunting nocturnal insects and slugs that are eating my veggies. Flying bugs/ insects are attracted by the light but a little mosquito spray on my shirt and gloves before putting them on will usually keep them away. My DH bought the Black Diamond headlights for me through a sports equipment internet site, I think. I have two of them so if I misplace one or the batteries are dead in one I still have the other. They use three AA batteries. They have stood up fine to my rough treatment for several years so far.
Many fishing tackle stores have inexpensive lights that clip to the bill of a cap. Outdoor sports outfitters such as REI have similar lamps with straps that fit directly on the head.
Both are very effective.
Wonderful ideas, thanks so much :)
Ladypearl - The Black Diamond headlamps look very good. I was looking for one that someone had actually used, so am glad you mentioned that you liked yours.
Glad to help. They are a little pricey but worth it (to me, anyway.)
I bought one at Walmart a few years ago, cheap & did the job!
