I will certainly watch for this on my basil. Of interest to me, though, was DeBaggio's statement that they lost 6,000 plants or $18,000 worth of basil. I'm clearly in the wrong business if there is a $3,000 potential per basil plant... Must check into that.

Yeah, pretty interesting sums, huh? I know my local grocers (Kroger, HEB) will sell basil for around $3.99 usually, maybe $2.99, for a bunch. Wish I could quantify this amount of basil more accurately...

I grow my own as I am sure most of us do. The scary part of the article said that the spores travel by air, but I guess that is always the case?

Umm, bonehead, check your math.. 6000 plants x $3 per plant = $18,000

I did pick up a small-leafed purple basil from DeBaggio's this spring, guess it was before they got hit with this, and my seed-grown plants have been fine this year. That is one of their most popular herbs, though, and they have a lot of different varieties, so I know losing that crop was a blow!

Ooopsie -- clearly not enough coffee yet this morning. I was ready to tear out all my herbs and replant with basil. There's a reason for my screen name...

LOL... you should still grow a lot of basil; everybody should! :-)

I hear chocolate basil is immune. :)
