I was saving some seed from my cole crops and got mixed up.
Can anyone tell me from the leaves what this is? I'm pretty sure it's Brussel Sprouts, but since I want to offer the seed, I'd like to be sure.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
What am I?
i got one of these for christmas and i will never have another problem with knowing what i am growing.
Gee, thanks for the answer. Soooo helpful!
is knew you would appreciate it. LOL
You're just darned lucky I can't smack you upside the head through the computer!
PS - Did you notice that the plant was PULLED because it had gone to seed???
On the other hand, since no one else even bothered to answer, I guess I should be happy I at least have someone to "talk" to.
Sequee... I don't have an answer for your plant ID but will advise you to go to the ID forum with your question. There are some "real" experts who tend to be more "serious" about getting ID questions resolved :)
Herbie, just teasing you... btw , how much does that device cost, I could use one!
Unless it's like a geiger counter and can ID something that's been ripped out of the garden, it won't help me!
what exactly is that thing and what does it do?
I can't help on your plant ID, but they most likely could help you in the Plant & Tree ID forum.
The other thing is a label maker.
Sequee,
How 'bout we work with a process of elimination? I can tell you what it's NOT.
It's not:
cabbage, kohlrabi, turnips, beets, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, lettuce, mustards or collard greens. These are all the cole crops I'm intimately familiar with.
I've never seen a Brussels Sprout plant, but I'd venture a guess that you're right...
Linda
Thanks Linda - after I yanked it out of the ground I couldn't remember if it came out of Square Foot Box 2 or 3; either Cauliflower, Brocolli, Kale, or BS. I knew it wasn't Kale, and didn't think it was cauliflower, but the other 2 were still up for grabs.
Thanks. I'd like to give the seeds to someone who wants them, but it helps if I know what the H*** they are!
Tx_Gardener,
That contraption is a Brother P-Touch Labeling system...
would appear superior to my sticky (not) notes......
Janice, the descriptions of brussels sprouts that I've seen talk about large round leaves, so I'm wondering if that's what you've got. Here are some links:
http://www2.cruzio.com/~bsprouts/photos/PHOTOS.htm
http://www.vegetable-garden-guide.com/how-to-grow-brussel-sprouts.html
and this has three pages to click through; here's the first:
http://www.hort.purdue.edu/ext/senior/vegetabl/brussels1.htm
You can also check out some of the other possibilities on that last link.
Is it possible that what you've got is none of the above? One year I planted Pinetree's cabbage mix and got radishes instead. And my seeds for Noire de Crimée gave me one potato-leafed plant this year that I'm watching with interest to see what results. So even though you know what seeds you planted in those areas, all of the resulting plants might not be what was advertised...
I've already looked at the Images, but thanks anyway.
These were seeding from my garden - having volunteered from last year. As stated above, it came out of SFB 2 or 3; either Cauliflower, Brocolli, Kale, or BS.
PS - If I'd taken the photo BEFORE it was all wilty, it would surely have been easier to recognize. The leaves are definitiely rounded. When I offer the seeds, I'll just explain the scenario - we'll see who's brave.
So, Linda - ya don't like BS???
Sequee,
I LOVE Brussels Sprouts, but I've read they won't grow well here. But, give me a minute, and I'll be growing some that'll knock your socks off!
What conditions do they grow best in? I know they like cool/cold, but what type growing medium is best? My other brassicas seem to prefer my blend of MG potting mix, homemade compost and leaf decomp with a side of bloodmeal.
LMK!
Thanks!
I mix my brassicas in the same beds and they seem equally as happy/unhappy. I have never done well with cabbage, or cauliflower or brocolli, but BS seem easier to grow, and I finally made out well growing Chinese Cabbage. In fact, I do believe the Soloist will be a regular in my garden.
PS - Linda - wouldn't you just LOVE to have the seeds to winter sow??? LOL - I'll throw in some of the fabulous Soloist Cabbage and some Saisai Radish seeds, too, if you are interested!
Um, are these the "mystery" seeds you're trying to identify? At this point, I'm game. No telling what I'll be growing this fall/winter, and where...
Go ahead and send me a package. LMK what you want in return.
Hugs!
Well, if it was a cellphone he'd a just called 9-1-1 for ER help identifying it...
And, if it was a calculator, he'd a just sat there figuring out how much $$ he spent on something he couldn't identify, and didn't know if he'd be able to give away...
(SMILE!!!)
Cool. Are you interested in the Soloist Cabbage and some Saisai Radish seeds, too?
Leaf Radish Sai sai
Rated the best Oriental leaf in taste tests by the RHS. A great punchy flavour, juicy and tender pale green succulent leaves for use in salads and stir-fry, a hybrid that has been developed for using at the young tender baby leaf stage. Saisai is slow bolting and can be grown all year round, ready for harvesting in 30-40 days. Sow early spring and autumn under cover, spring and summer outdoor, sow thickly in close drills.
Hey Sequee,
I'll pass on the raddish seeds, but do send the Soloist cabbages.
Thx!
Linda

I haven't managed to get the timing down on the snow peas, but I'd sure like to try again! You're twisting my arm. Send them!
