Black Swallowtail Caterpillars - a few Questions...

Hammond, LA(Zone 8b)

I have been checking my dill and parsley every day, and finally I found eggs. Yay! The problem is... I found about 15 eggs. I wasn't expectingthat many. When I had Monarch eggs, I only had 6-8, and I had alot more milkweed than I have dill and parsley.

Do BST caterpillars wat as much as Monarch caterpillars? Those were some hungry little critters! I am going to try to get some more parsley/dill/fennell today.

I took 5 eggs inside, and I left the rest outside.

Anyone know a good source for these plants online?

Thanks, Jennifer

They eat almost as much as the Monarchs. I don't do online plant purchasing so I am not sure where you can buy them at this time. But, if you get the very young cats you can switch them over to parsley. Then I have bought some parsley in the grocery store. Just make sure you soak it in for several minutes in water then rinse and drain it. You can put it in the frig inside a ziploc bag wrapped in a damp paper towel to keep it fresh.

Thanks Sheila. I think I may have better luck finding Parsley plants than dill or fennel.

Also the dill and fennel don't recoop as well as parsley.
