One of the things I like best about some hydrangeas is the evolving color of the blooms as they age.
This one develops a reddish margin around each petal as it ages.
But I've never noticed this phenomenon before:
it looks like the reddish discoloration is a response to minor injury to the petal.
In this case, the injury is a nibble from an insect.
I thought it was interesting.
bleeding hydrangea
Interesting. I'll have to go see if I have any bleeding on mine.
How did you find out that it's caused by an insect? Just curious.
I don't know for sure - just guessing, based on the little hole in the petal.
That IS interesting
I would say your guess is absolutely right, Weerobin. I think the injury to the petal just hurried the coloration along.
Paniculata hydrangeas have a tendency to do that also.
