Gardenia, Cape Jasmine, Gandharaj 'Crown Jewel' (Gardenia jasminoides)
I have had a Gardenia slip given to me about 15 or 20 years ago planted on north side of house in ammended clay in I think about zone 8 and it had done well. It was too large to move when I sold the place so I took a slip from her and planted it in a sandy area with clay beneath in zone 7b in Nov 2001 where it gets some sun most of day. It has had really good blooms for the last 4 years. Got so big had to do some pruning after the blooms this year..
Hey everyone.
Just a note that I will be test the Crown Jewel for zone 5b. It is in a protected area on the east side of my house. The soil is loamy clay. I added peat moss to break up the clay. Acidity of soil is between 4.0-5.0.
See what happens.
Almost 1 year later and the Crown Jewel Gardenia is doing very well in Zone 5. We had very warm weather causing most plants to push new growth too early and then a very extreme cold for 2 weeks at the end of April. The Gardenia's foliage did excellent with a few burnt leaves. The flower buds were all killed off by the frost. Otherwise it is getting ready to push new growth.
Update on Crown Jewel Gardenia
The winter of 2012-2013 was very cold and somewhat dry. It lost all foliage till June when it quite vigorously sprouted leaves with some flowering taking place in August.
This winter was bad. Very cold (few nights in the teens), but lots of snow for root protection. The gardenia is stone dead. It was enjoyable while it lasted.
At the time I first purchased the plant in 2011 there was a note on the Crown Jewel's official website stating the gardenia was being tested in zone 5. I now see that the official site no longer has zone 5 as an option. They obviously discovered this before me. I would only recommend this gardenia for zone 7 and up or in an extremely protected zone 6. Harrisburg, PA is 50 miles south and they lost the same zone 6 plants that we did in our area.
