FIRST EGG!!!

(Zone 5b)

We have our first egg!!! There are only about 100 pics of DN posing with it LOL.

It's very tiny and olive blue in color. Could it be possible that it's from the Silkie girl? I thought they were brown egg layers but it's so tiny I'm just guessing. I know it's not from one of the Buff Orps. Farrah, an EE'er has shown a lot of interest in the nestng boxes the last couple of days so maybe it's hers?

WHOOOOOOOOOOO we're so excited and can't stop looking at it!

We found it behind the little door that goes out into their run. We have shavings and golf balls in the nesting boxes but I guess they pick their own place?

Congrats to you Annie: I want to celebrate with you,,,doing the happy chicken dance. Yeah!!!! And the crowd roars...More, we want More...Hay

(Zone 5b)

LOL, Hay Thank you! We just can't stop looking at it! It's a beautiful tiny egg, perfectly shaped. We're dancing too, cha cha cha!!

When are they usually done laying for the day? I must have checked the coop every 15 minutes today!

Can't wait until tomorrow, hope there is another one!

Conroe, TX

Wow, what a color, it is probably the EE's, Silkies don't lay that color but EE's do and their first eggs will be smaller.
Congrats!

Richmond, TX

It certainly is an unusual color. It will be interesting to see what other colors you get.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

yeah big congrats Annie. I was so excited when I got my first Blk Copper Marans eggs I dropped and smashed it trying to take pics lol

Ferndale, WA

Smedge is right, what you have there is a pullet egg, and they will enlarge little by little til about six weeks and then full sized. Beautiful egg. The first egg is about the same as the first hatch I think...Hay

(Zone 5b)

Thanks everyone! We're soo excited! I'm going to try to blow the egg out tomorrow so we can keep our very first one. It's a great day, first egg, and almost 10 minutes of rain, the first we've had in over 2 weeks!

Farmington, NM(Zone 5a)

oh annie that's a GAWjuss egg! how funny i was thinking of trying to blow out all my fairy eggs too when i finally get some.

i can't wait for my girls to start - i noticed about 8 of mine are getting nice and red around the face, mainly the wyandottes and dark cornish and white leghorn so far. so maybe they will start in august. my ee's are apparently enjoying being teenagers too much and aren't ready to grow up, even though they were the oldest of my chicks so they should mature first but HA! guess they have other plans!

mini eggs will get bigger - it's sort of like a test run i guess you could say, then when they know everything is working the eggs work up to normal size. did you put a plastic egg in the nest box? sometimes it takes the girls a while to figure out where they are supposed to put their eggs, and it helps to give them an example. although sometimes you will get a stubborn hen who won't use the nest box no matter what. rather like some cats...

ha ha i've been working on your sign all weekend, maybe that's why you got an egg! LOL

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi Annie!
We got our first egg today too - in the pouring rain! Lizzie is so happy with her chickens. We found it outside the coop. One of the girls must have been pretty surprised and layed it outside....
Do let us know if you get more... :)

Congratulations, what a pretty egg! Is that from an EE hen? Let me know when you get more, we didn't get any today. Guess the Girls thought we had enough excitement for one week LOL.

Richmond, TX

I thought that Ameraucanas and Easter Eggers layed similar eggs, but my Ameraucanas have never produced an egg that deeply colored. Is that a common color for EEs?

(Zone 5b)

I can't wait for the barn sign, it's beautiful! No more eggs today but it's RAINING tonight, and that's even better. It's been sooo dry for weeks now.

I bought two Welsummers today. They have to stay in a pen in the garage for a while before I feel comfortable putting them with my Girls. Now I just need to find 2 Black Copper Maran's and my flock will be complete!

(Zone 5b)

Is there a difference between EE's and Ameraucanas? I have seen Hatchery chicks called both and some of the pictures of them are the same. Now I have to go look it on Meyers where I bought them.

Is a Cherry Egger the same as an EE or Ameraucana? I only remember hearing the name but don't remember their egg color.

(Zone 5b)

Meyer Hatchery - under "Tinted Egg Layers" lists them as Ameraucanas the Easter Egg Chicken. Hmm. I sure hope to get some eggs as beautiful as you have, Deb!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

I think Ameraucana and Easter eggers are one and the same. I suppose we can blame it on Martha Stewart.
No more eggs today (at least so far). I'd like to get the chickens that lay dark chocolate colored eggs - do you know which they are?

Farmington, NM(Zone 5a)

here's what i found out when i was researching the exact same question - my ee's came from mcmurray and were even more confusing because they label them araucana/ameraucana and then in the description call them easter eggers, so i really didn't know what the difference was at all.

technically, ameraucanas have to meet specific breed standards. they have to have the right kind of comb, muffs and a beard (not one or the other or neither), retain the gray or green legs, and lay a blue-green egg. essentially, that would require them to be only one or two generations from the original araucana parent, because the muffs in particular are a recessive trait so many offspring don't have them or have incomplete ones. the farther away from the original cross you get, the less likely the desired traits will show up reliably.

ee's are crosses that somewhere in the ancestry was an araucana but there have been enough other breeds added in that many of the traits no longer show up - some don't have dark legs anymore, or have a different kind of comb - and depending on what crosses there were the eggs can be pinkish, even slightly red-violet, barely tinted, olive green, and of course blue or green. that is how they end up being called easter eggers, since there can be a variety of colors and not just blue-green.

Los Gatos, CA

I really would like to know what kind of chicken laid these eggs! The color is great! I have just hatched a cross from my Americuna and BCM. I hope to get some Olive eggs! I would love to get an darker blue egg, as mine are more of a teal color. Are there any breeds that lean toward more blue? And the pink, is that a fluke?

(Zone 5b)

Olice eggs would be so beautiful!!!

We got another egg this morning, early, so maybe we'll get another today. It doesn't take much to entertain and excite us LOL. The color is different than the one we got on Friday, it's darker. Both eggs were in the same place, behind their walk out door to the run. Why are they ignoring the clean fluffy nesting boxes??

Deb, the dark chocolate eggs come from the Black Copper Maran. I've been on a hunt for good ones for months with no luck.

The two Welsummers I bought yesterday - I put wazine in their water last night, UGH, were they ever wormy! I expected them, and all chickens, to be wormy at some point since they eat stuff off the ground.

Annie and Deb- Those were both beautiful eggs. Such nice olive coloring, which I am especially fond of. I must have missed this thread earlier LOL!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi newyorkrita!
All 4 girls are now laying. One lays the green, another olive, one sky blue and the last pale pale blue. We've had a couple of eggbound incidents, but for the most part, they are giving us 2-3 eggs a day.
It's so fun - and tasty!

(Zone 5b)

Thanks Rita, the novelty of the first egg hasn't worn off. We still get excited when we check for eggs and ohhh and awww over each one.

Hope you stayed dry and out of Earl's way!

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Annie- I stayed too dry from Earl, was counting on some rain because we needed it but in spite of the forcast not a drop of rain here and just a
somewhat cloudy day.

Are your Welsummers laying or are they too young?

Tamberlin- I just love the idea of the mixed colors of eggs in the blue, olive and even pinkish ranges that seem to come from the Easter Eggers. You did really well with your egg colors. Would love to see a picture of your eggs collected one day wiith all the colors showing.

(Zone 5b)

Too bad you missed the rain, Rita, but glad you missed the storm. It's bone dry here, we got 30 seconds of rain yesterday.

The Welsummers aren't old enough to lay yet. I'm not really counting so it can be a surprise LOL. I hope their eggs are speckled and now I want Olive Eggers LOL

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Annie- I see an addition to the chicken coop or even a second coop in your future LOL :-)) I want olive egger myself too.

(Zone 5b)

LOL, yup! I've been checking the bargin hunter paper for a used shed to convert into a coop.

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Ha, I knew it. I didn't even need any fortune telling skills to figgure out that one LOL :-))

(Zone 5b)

Honestly, Rita, I never imagined how much fun chickens could be or how attached we would get to them! Earlier this evening we sat out in the field with the Girl's and fed them strawberries, one for them, one for the dogs. How fun!!
