So wet potatoes have rotted in the ground

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Wet yes we are wet! In 2 rains a week apart we got about 8 inches. About 4 each time in half an hour. The water was standing in the garden for a week.

Yesterday I went out to check them and the ground was still spongy. Dug up several hills going down the row about 10 feet. All rotted! Didn't check the far end was to disgusted.

Anyway will the rotted potatoes cause any problems to the soil? I know the worms are having a blast!

Ves522,
If the potatoes weren't diseased in any way, I don't see why they would cause a problem. You'll just end up with more, happy worms, to help you till for next time...

Sorry about your loss. I grew spuds this spring for the first time, in 20 gallon SmartPots and old washing machine tubs. Not a bumper crop, mind you, but just enough to reward my efforts and encourage me to plant A WHOLE LOT MORE this coming August. It was just too EZ.

Here're the seed potatoes I got from Ronniger's about 3 weeks ago. They seem to be raring to jump under some dirt!

Mine were potatoes I had saved from last year.Really nice ones. I know you aren't suppose tosave them but they were from what I grew last year from boughten starts.

About a 30-35 foot row each of reds and blues! Gone all gone! It is pouring rain out there now. Sigh!

Nice lookin starts. What are they?

I don't care how many I get. They are just fun to grow and dig up and then eat! My gardens are my fun and relation.

Thanks!

See the tators way over there on the other side of the new pond? That was the next day. I was hoping it would drown the weeds in between the tators and corn but no such luck. Glad we didn't get all that planted this year.

Well, that stinks!!!

I'm not have the best of seasons myself, but (so far), the potatoes are doing pretty darned good. I dug up half a dozen All Blue's last night that I will have for dinner tonight with whatever else I can pick this evening - surely a tomato and cuke salad and some filet beans, and probably a One Ball Squash for munch on with hummus pre-supper.

I love diggin' and pickin' my dinner!
