Sea Grape

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

I'm in zone 8b, just north of Lake Pontchartrain in SE Louisiana. Does anyone have a sea grape outside where you get mild freezes? I bought one because I think they're so neat with their big frisbee leaves and now I'm not sure what to do with it. I was thinking I might plant it on the south side of the house and close to the house to give it some protection. Or should I keep it as a container plant and bring it indoors for winter? Will it even live indoors?

I'm in 8b, and although I don't have one, I haven't seen any in other yards - hopefully, someone will come along and give you experienced advice.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I had one for 3 years and it died to the ground but returned until winter 2010, which it did not survive. I had it well covered. I'm in zone9a. I would like to grow this again, but have to think hard of a better, more protected place for it.

I've never heard of people overwintering it, but you try and let us know. then, we'll know what to do, lol.

Funny, b/c just 1 hr further south (Galveston) they grow to the point of annoyance.

Same, here, Voss - they do just fine about an hour south of where I live!

thanks y'all. last winter was bad here too voss. i lost a 19 year old p. selloum. it put out new plants this spring from the roots but the huge parent plant froze. i was so sad.

i think i'm going to plant it for now. if i lose my nerve, i may dig it up before the cold comes and try to overwinter it at work. it's such a cool looking plant and i was hoping it would be an interesting focal point for the front of the house. i'll let you know how it goes.

Abbeville, LA

I am growing var. sea grape in a misting bed and they are doing great. their hardier than you think but up until now I've put them in the greenhouse in the winter.

Something is eating mine with great appetite. I spray it but it rains every day and I guess washes the spray off. Every new leaf gets eaten while it's still soft. I bet it's one of those lubber grasshoppers. I HATE those things!
