Dear Bob,

I'm trying to identify a fan-shaped palm I bought here in Northern Thailand. I thought it was a Hooker's fishtail palm but it looks more like the one in the foreground of this photo you took of it.

Can you tell me what that is? Please reply directly to me at pricecaldwell@gmail.com.

Many thanks,

Teep1

that is a Licuala grandis

Do you remember how much that Licuala grandis cost? It is so big next to the one I saw for $179.

Depends where you're buying one... can get them for a lot cheaper in some areas of Hawaii, but sort of depends what you think 'big' is. this is a fairly fast-growing palm and very easy to grow if you live in the right climate... if you do not, these are near impossible.

I would try one in my dining room if it did not break my bank!

You have to work hard to keep it humid, in bright light, and keep the spidermites off it.

Probably a bad idea. My days of working hard are over.
