OK, summer just started and now its time to start thinking fall?!
I did not have any radish this spring, they all bolted before I could get out there and pull the eats! But I have tons of seed now! I think its a tad early to do them for a new crop.
So what are you doing? Whatcha starting now?
Someone mentioned they were starting cukes for a fall crop. Im off to the store to find some of those seed! My spring plants are still growing.. but I sure would love more!
Ok, spill the beans guys.. whad-are-ya starting? You know you want to!
COOL FALL VEGGIE GARDENS 2010 - WHOSE IN?
We're picking yellow squash and cucumbers now, I planted the national pickling cucumber, I always have a better crop of cucumbers when I wait a while on my cukes, planting them sometime in May . but we have a second crop of cukes planted now.
We're about to plant these
2nd crop of zipper cream peas
lady finger peas,
pink purple hull peas
collards,
turnips
mustard green
spinach
a few more tomatos for fall eating
I have butternut and spegetting squash coming up now that I planted about a week ago.
we did something new this year and planted a second crop of blue lake pole beans, we'll see how they do.
we were going to do all this planted tomorrow but it's raining now so we'll have to put it off again. Hopefully they can do it while I'm at work next week ;0)
I will not do late tomates here. The spring pants seem to be late enough and sometimes will not even ripen. I am poking those cukes in today!..I only have about 9 plants on my fence now and they are not really putting out yet.
Poked in some Marketmores.....
For the late garden I have cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli seeds
Am thinking to sow them in large nursery cans and leave them in them
Buit the cabbage will have to be transplanted
I just called my daughter to tell her to bring the over grown cuke that is still on the vine. I am planning on trying to germinate some of the seeds for a late crop.
I think I am winning the battle in battling wilted cuke leaf disease. i am continuing to administer aspirin ... they are in earth boxes which has a watering tube to the reservouir of water for the container. I have been dropping the aspirin into the this tube. Here is a picture taken on Monday. There were quite a lot of wilted leaves then. I picked thesebleaves off and trashed them. Today there was only one wilted leaf. I will post a picture of the plant as it looks today later.
Weird, never heard of that! Ok, Doctor merrymath, do your thing!
My cukes are yellowish.. need to fertilize them.. been thinking chickie poo tea.. but am wondering if I will burn them worse.
Merrymath,
Do you just add one aspirin per EB? Last year a man I was buying fertilizer from suggested using an aspirin in the Kelp spray he was recommending. He said it was cheaper than using Messenger (I never actually did use my Messenger so can't compare). I did try the aspirin once but it took a long time to dissolve and I can't say it made any difference one way or another. Your idea of putting it directly in the EB is intriguing. Just watered mine today. Should go and see if I can find the aspirin bottle!
It has been quite a busy day for me. Before going to the doctor I water some of my veggies in containers. I have 3 topsy turvy trees that need watering more than once a day in the exyensive heat waves we have been experiencing. I urge you not to consider a topsy turvy investment ... the earth box (I have 9) are more superior and easier.
I recently changed doctors. My present doctor is a MDVIP physician.
http://www.mdvip.com/newcorpwebsite/index.aspx
It is a pricey program but i am so glad I joined. the focus is on preventive medicine. Part of the program involves extensive annual tests and checks. As a result of the pre-physical I had last Friday, I became aware of eye problems. I have not had my eyes checked in years and this just creeped up on me ... CATERACTS! If I cover my left eye and just look out my right eye it is like looking through heavy plastic. The left eye seems OK, but the doctor thinks that eye may also require attention. I have an appoint next Friday to see one of the eye doctors she (my doctor) recommended.
A recent ultra sound that she requested because she suspected a possibiliy of gallstones indicated her suspions to be on track. Recent blood test indicated my colesterol was higher then she liked.
She told me top priority was the eyes.
She perscribed medication for colesterol and advised me to take vitamin D supplements .... will have follow up blood testing in 6 weeks. She was quite interested in my use of aspirin for plants and requested updates.
On my way home I stopped at Home Depot and looked around. Only thing that was of interest were some hydrangeas ... about $15 each. I decided to pass on them as I had just (yesterday) taken 4 hydrangea cuttings from the neighbor. I am hoping my first endeavors in rooting them are successful.
My route home went pass my favorite local garden center and I just had to stop and look around. I ended up purchasing 2 hydrangeas (4 times size of those at Home Depot) Cost for both $35 plus sales tax
Next stop ... local drug store .... TROUBLE started .... radio died .... air condionered reduced its flow. Stop and got perscription filled. Car barely started. Drove about 1 1/2 blocks and as I was about to turn onto a main street ... CAR DIED! NO POWER. As luck would have a local police officer was in a patrol car right behind me. He said it had to be an electrical problem. I explained that a new battery was installed the end of May and a new alternator July 5th. He said he could arrange for me to have it towed. The tow truck driver advised me to have it towed to the facility (Tires plus) that had installed the battery and alternator. He was nice enough to drive pass my house (which was only a block out of our way) to drop off my 2 new hydrangea bushes.
The manager at Tires Plus remebered me from having the alternator installed. He said he would have one of his staff drive me home and would call me when the problem was resolved.
Upon my return home I watered all the container veggies .... those tomatoe tree containers were fairly dry.
Called and made an appointment with eyedoctor. Person who scheduled appointment unable to provide directions to facility ... she transferred me all I kept getting was voice options grrrrrr .... gave up and hung up phone.
Called younger daughter (lives 25 miles away) to find out if she planned to visit me next week so we could make a dry run to the eye care facility. She told me she was going to be in my vicinity today (She needed to make a late workshop registration at a nearby facility).
Made dry run .... went shopping .... ordered and picked up chinese food ... picked up car (alternator defective) .... reimbursed for towing ($60).
Ate chinese food ... watered containers of flowers on back deck .... gave cukes some more aspirin. Then evening telephone conversations.
Sorry no time to take pictures of cukes today. Hopefully tomorrow.
Here is a picture of my peppers in 2 earth boxes.
I missed something. Whats the aspirin supposed to do?
Lisa, visit this site

I read the article calling for 1.5 aspirins per 2 gallons of water. So in an earthbox that holds 2 gallons of water would that be the same? I would not be foliar feeding so wonder if the plants can use the same dosage for root feeding.
Interesting
that is all so interesting!
Cuke leaf wilt info
http://www.uri.edu/ce/factsheets/sheets/bacterialwiltcuc.html
I have been dropping 2 to 3 325 mg aspirin into the watering tube of the 2 earthboxes containing cuke. The pictue is of the container that had two more wilting leaves.
here I thought it was just the heat....
I'm in! But I'm not sure when it will cool off- November? LOL LOL LOL!!!!
Those beetles look like the same ones that were all over my coreopsis. I cut them back severely and threw them in the garbage can. Now I am worried about my cukes, that look marvelous right now. Egads. What next. I have one planting of beans that look bad and am also worried about my tomatoes. Here is a picture of one of the beetles.

Oh, sorry. I need to stay on track.
My fall plantings are cabbage, Brussels sprouts, red cabbage, and cauliflower. Just a few of each since there are just two of us. I plan to add Chinese cabbage soon and maybe some more broccoli. I found a small headed broccoli, just right for two, at Territorial Seeds. I have 4 of those starting to head now. I also want to put in some beets or maybe carrots in a particular spot that I have left for them. I love fall veggies. They are so easy to care for and it's wonderful to be able to go out and get something for dinner when everything else is gone.
I better get a few cabbage going.. Its great to freeze. You boil the heads and as the leaves fall off around the head, you pluck them out of the pot and rinse in cold water. Then lay the leaves in a zippy baggie and freeze! Great for stuffing too!
Wow. I never knew you could freeze cabbage. And, that sounds like a great way to blanch the leaves, too. I must remember to try that. Thanks
I'm going to try for the THIRD time to get the brassicas timed correctly.
My current batch, (which I planted in February), should have been coming on in June. But they bolted or died in July. Like everywhere else, our weather has been SO weird...hrumph!
So, my current plan it to plant cabbage, broccoli, brussels sprouts, beets, carrots, radishes, spinach, lettuces, and kale starting in mid August through September. Hopefully, that will mean that we will be eating fresh food throughout the winter. I'm also going to put in more peas and see how they manage in late October and November.
Wish me luck!
Good Luck, Happy Girl !! Sounds like you will have a fabulous fall and winter garden.
I'm in!
Cole crops, carrots, tomatoes, green beans, peppers as long as they'll produce, squashes, sweet potatoes which are already in progress, onions, and garlic. I will be starting a bunch of these when I get back from vacation. Can't rely on DH to remember to water/observe/etc while I am gone for two weeks. I might even return with some rhubarb from my aunt's garden to trial in my garden in the south.
Hmmm onions? I never have tried a second crop and the first was pathetic. Im so tempted to put the first crop back inthe ground after they dry! LOL! theyare not even the size of golfballs....pathetic!
Seriously.. does anyone think it would work?
I actually think it could work. I buy tiny bulbs at the local feed store and plant those. I have had onions sprout in the fridge on me before. Down here, we plant them in November/December and harvest in the spring (May-ish). They love the cold. Guess that's why the sprout in the vegetable drawer. When did you originally plant them? They are also very heavy feeders. I was advised to put a tablespoon of bonemeal in the planting hole. I got pretty good onions out of it. Dd the same for the garlic.
I think onions grow by day length. Then it depends on where you live and at which parallel. Seriously.....Thats why onions have to be planted at the correct time and you have to plant the right onion, too,for your location. Here is one though that I love because it's more of an Anytime little guy. www.territorialseed.com/product/991/209
I have grown onion in the fall, not from seed though. Onions are long and short day.
About how many days form sowing sets to harvest? Whats your biggest variety? I want a BIG onion.
My garlic fizzled....darned tops got ruined by the renovation and the bulbs are still in their spot. I wonder if they will come bigger? I yanked a couple out and the bulbs were rock hard and about the size of a quarter.
I cuke seed started.. Jeez that was fast! I will have to be careful watering no so I do not kill the babies!
We plant everything in the fall. I've already started tomatoes for the fall, everything else will go in in August and Sept. Hope we don't have a once in 20 years freeze again.
