New baby and

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

hoping for more. Finally have a Silver Fulvous hatch and hope some normal ones too. Daddy who was on nest duty came out and got Momma. Both went back to the nest. I was cleaning a refilling the pool. I looked up and there was daddy with a baby. He went back to nest and left the baby out in the open area of the cage. It was surrounded by the juvie Ringed Teal so I scooped it up and brought it back to the nesting cage area and closed the door. Daddy tore me up lol and brought the baby back into the ground nest. Both Mom and Dad are in it so I think there will be more hatching. Pics maybe tomorrow

here's daddy a Silver Fulvous Whistling Duck. Silver is a mutation only found in captivity unless someone turns some loose to the wild. I pray that doesn't happen

ADORABLE!!

Lodi, United States

I've never heard of a Whistling Duck...the males seem to be good fathers, unlike Mallards.

I have had the Black Belled Whistling Tree ducks when I lived in Fort Worth and now see them flying around the place. Maggi said one day that a couple of wild ducks were eating with our Calls in the driveway. A few weeks later we seen the flying by and I knew they were BBWTD. I see them all the time lately, must be moving into the area.

Way cool Donna.

woo hoo Daddy is a real stud muffin. I have 7 silver babies this morning. Has me thinking Mom is split to Silver. Should have had a 50/50 hatch

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Because Silver is a recessive gene, mom would have to be split or all would be Wild Type colored. As you said, should be 50/50. The chances of getting 7 in a row out of this breeding is 1 in 128. Girl you should pack up and go to Vegas. I am breeding peafowl to get Pieds and the cock is split to Pied and the hens are split to White ( Pieds are co-dominant to White ). This should give me a 1 in 4 chance of Pied. I got three in a row, which is a 1 in 64 chance. I thought I was lucky but you trumped me, lol. Great hatch, this will give you hours of enjoyment just sitting and watching. My best times is in the Fall of the year, setting on a 5 gal. bucket in the middle of a pen, looking at the juveniles and wondering what they will look like when they grow up. I have bred peafowl hybrids that have never been seen before and it just a lot of fun. I sure don't do it for the $.

Ken I keep a nice comfy chair in the Aviary and spend time watching them everyday. Some are getting pretty ugly right now molting.

yep they are just my pets but now going to have to buy the Federal Permit License so I can sell them as my off spring in my name. I could keep them and not have to buy Permit but to sell I have to get my own. Can't use the Permits that came with the Parents from the other breeders. Guess I better learn how to ship a live bird because that is the only way I will be able to sell them

Richmond, TX

What a nuisance !

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

yes it is PP but they are Federally Protected U.S. Migratory birds and I knew it when I bought them. Have other species with Permits too. I don't know if it is a 1 time 100.00 purchase or every year. I am going to wait as long as I can before trying to sell them so hopefully my permit will cover next summer babies too if it is a yearly thing. So far my Black-bellied & White-Faced Whistlers haven't laid or the Nothern Shovelers, Falcated Teal, or Goldeneyes. Some don't lay until 2nd yr. My others are non native and don't require a Permit. Tommorrow I have to toe clip them. They have to be permanately marked as a captive raised bird and the parents are going to tear us up. They wouldn't even let me get pics today from outside the pen. They are keeping them hidden

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

I have never liked to toe clipping ukk, but I know it must be done.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I would rather toe clip than pinion them. I have never done it before and only pinioned some Mandies once. They didn't bleed. Does it bleed much toe clipping?? I have some powder to stop bleeding if it does

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes but not much if done early, they get over it faster than I do. It just seems so wrong to take off a toe, they have done nothing to deserve that.
