Hello
is there anyone here who can tell me the exact species of Narcissus that was/is being planted in Julian, CA, as part of the "Julian Daffodil Project?"
thanks
Julian Daffodils
Here's a PR piece about the Julian daffodil show. It states that Sally Snipes of Julian started the Julian Daffodil Project 15 years ago as a memorial to her father. Scroll down this website for contact info for her: http://julianartsguild.org/artistsNZ.aspx There are a couple of mentions of other people (Carol Jacklin, Joyce Axelrod) when I googled "Julian Daffodil Project" who have also been involved.
Hope this helps. Let us know what you find out!
I ended up contacting the American Daffodil Society and this was the answer I received:
"Your question about the daffodils in Julian, CA, intrigued me. I did a little looking on the Internet, and found that Sally Snipes did the original planting as a tribute to her father. I called her, and she said she originally planted a mixed bushel of bulbs, but it was probably a King Alfred-type daffodil. That was 20 years ago, and now there are over a million daffodils blooming in the spring."
Great! I guess that was probably the most economical way to go back in those days. It would be nice to know the names of the other daffodils though, wouldn't it?
i'm still getting responses from the good people of the Julian Daffodil Project. This is perhaps the most authoritative of all and confirms the previously received info:
"Hello, our project chair was in Hawaii and I couldn't ask her about the species until today. She believes all of the flowers are King Alfred. The project was started over 20 years ago and she wasn't aware of the species until about 10 years into the project. "
