Something wrong with broccoli leaves

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I can't seem to get a good picture of this, but my broccoli leaves have some sort of specks of something on them. At first it looked almost like dead aphids, with a shiny green tone, and then more and more of the specks are blackish. A few of the bottom leaves have died. The stems look ok.

Could it be some sort of fungus? They're mulched and under row cover, so it's probably more moist than it should be.

It also almost looks like some sort of bug poo, but the way it's distributed, it can't be. I've looked up common broccoli diseases, and I'm stumped. Anyone have any ideas?

Does it wash off or is the leaf pitted?

ummm, try to let a little more air to broccoli, it is kin to a cabbage, how early do you get up in the am? check for worms

It doesn't wash off with the hose, but it looks like maybe I could kind of scratch it off. They don't seem to be lesions like you would see with some diseases.

You're probably right about the air, kittriana. It's under row cover and planted on the west side of the potatoes. The potatoes give it a bit of shade, and the row cover keeps almost all of the worms out. I've probably gone a little overboard, and it's too moist and stagnant in there. Not a single cabbage worm, though! :o)

It's getting too hot for them anyway. I guess I'll pull the plants and burn them. And not put my fall broccoli there, as I'd originally planned on doing. If anyone has any insight on what this might be and/or how to clean up, please chime in.
