My (one leaf) very weakly variegated Alocasia sanderiana

Gainesville, FL

This is about as exciting as my one leaf variegated Caryota palm, LOL. But maybe some other leaves will also show up with a little variegation, LOL. I have had this plant for about 5 years, it goes dormant every winter and comes back out in early summer. This is the first hint of variegation it has ever shown

But what chance do you think that this could develop into a stable characteristic of the plant?

Hmmm...maybe zilch? SInce its never done it before in years and its only one leaf, I have to say it may just be an aberrant thing. I seem to get 'one time' variegation on lots of stuff. I have had Xanthosoma Lime Zinger that came out with big deep green splashes on some leaves...never lasted. I had a Costus survibracteatus that came out variegated but it didn;t last. And then there is my said Caryota palm that has variegation on only one leaflet. I've watched all the new growth, but no signs of new variegation. But its fun while it lasts, LOL

In order for it to last, the variegation has to appear in one of the shoot meristematic cells, one that will continue giving rise to new leaf and shoot primordia. In this way, the new leaves and shoots would acquire some variegated cells as they are produced. If the cell that variegates is not a meristematic cell, it will divide only to form "permanent" tissue, such as your leaf, and then won't be in a position to contribute to further variegation.

One leaf wonder, LOL. I'll enjoy it while it lasts
