Who grows these and what advice can you give about them. Which one(s) do you grow?
Cheryl
Honeysuckle
Cheryl isn't it illegal to grow Honeysuckle here? It smells wonderful, but Lawd it take over. I loved mine but we cut it back in the fall. I planted my Clematis in it and did it look beautiful running between the yellow and white. The house in the back of me never touch theirs and it look so ratty. I want to get a piece but I am scared ... what the hell ... I am going to get me a piece . lol now that you made me think of it. lol
I do think they look better growing in full sun.
Illegal???? It's EVERYWERE. Once it gets going..boy does it get going. It's one of those vines that you will either love it or you will hate it. Me personally...I love it not in my yard. We had one when I was growing up and all those years with it was enough to make me never want to get one.
I did however like to lick the sweet sticky stuff from the flowers though..hehehe.
There's different kinds of honeysuckle, including bush kinds. I've gotten enamored of Lonicera albiflora. Here it mostly stays a bush, gets 3-4 feet tall. (OK, kind of a viny bush, but it stands up on its own.) Supposedly it will get a good bit taller with water, but I've never seen it here. It drops its leaves in the winter.
Lonicera sempervirens is the red vine one. It's great for hummingbirds, but definitely will take off growing if it gets adequate water. Mine is growing straight up an arbor-thing, rather than mounding on the ground, so it's pretty easy to see any stray shoots at ground level and keep them cleared. This one might stay green-ish all winter, depends on the weather and the location.
Here is the type I grow. Its called Gold Flame Honeysuckle. The prettiest in my opinion and not really invasive.

Ohh wow Brandon...that one may change my opinion on honeysuckles. I guess I never really thought there were different kinds....duh...
I am not thinking of the white and yellow, I was thinking of the one with orange or redish flowers and I have grown it other places and not found it to be invasive. I am trying to think of a replacement for my 2 maypops which are spreading everywhere and must go. The vines need to be able to tolerate part sun and not spread to all corners of the earth, any suggestions?

Both Texas honeysuckle (Lonicera albiflora) and Coral honeysuckle ( Lonicera semperviren) are native to Texas.

It's the coral honeysuckle I want to try. I don't think it is invasive and I was just wondering how well it does here and if it will be ok in part sun. Thanks AJ.

Cheryl, would you want to trade those maypops for a small agave plant?
I was planning on attempting to save them for someone. I am not sure I am going to the fall RU but if I do, they are yours. I have been busy with other chores and am dreading the mess it will make taking them out but I plan to remove both of the good sized plants and possibly a few of the many off shoots soon.

The Coral Honeysuckle does very well here.
I guess the honeysuckle I had at the old place was the boring yellow and white, its been around for hundreds of years. Brandon, what you got I saw in the catalogs and they didn't call it Honeysuckle, your is gorgeous! If you ever want to trade ... hint ... let me know. :)
