Hello everyone !!!! I ran out of milkweed for my monarchs. They ate all 6 plants. I wasn't expecting that many hungry mouths and HD running out of them. What can I do !?!?!? I don't want the caterpillars to die of hunger. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!!!
HELP!!!! Ran out of milkweeds and HD doesn't have any either
Roly have you tried your local nursery? Your local extension or chapter of Naba might be able to help.
Well I've got good news and bad news. Out of the 11 caterpillars that were on the milkweeds 9 pupated but one got squashed and 2 caterpillars died because of no food so I've got 8 chrysalids developing into butterflies; in 2 weeks I should have Monarchs. Now HD should have new milkweeds by Tuesday and mines are in the recovery room for now.
My local farmer's market has vendors who grow various plants for butterfly gardening, amongst other things. You may try your local FM- they will probably have an array of plants for your monarchs.
Well I'm not sure where the closest farmer market is to me. I'm in a very much so metropolitan area I have the big downtown buildings about a 10 minutes drive from me. I wish I lived in Homestead of a bit farther away from the crazyness. I will have to wait for Tuesday and order some milkweed seeds to germinate and have plenty of supplies for them.
You can also order plants from Monarch Watch. I've heard they ship pretty quick.
The seeds take along time to grow to the point where the caterpillars can make a decent meal from them. I do have some seeds if you would like to start some to be ready for next year.
