is this an alpinia intermedia "sun spice"? or .....???? i got it tiny...it's a nice size now...put it in an understory area...it has some browning to the leaves i think because of the moisture??? but it's growing.

I can tell you..Mine DOES NOT like bright light..it loves shade here where I am at...and they are picky about too much water too...lol
nadine...is it a alpinia intermedia "sun spice"??? since i'm not certain...i got it from one of my old suppliers in the ocala area a few months ago...it was tiny...i have two of them....it's probably the humidity or the moisture underneath that's causing the browning...otherwise the plant looks healthy i think?

yes, i think it does absolutely look the same... YIKES it was expensive...this one came from one of my ex suppliers up in ocala....she's NOT a ginger grower per sa like richard is, but had these and gave them to me when i went up for a visit.

I didn't buy mine from that $$$ place..bought mine at a local nursery..lol... no blooms yet...
oh...no i hope not...she gave me the two and they are growing in the understory....but not huge and no signs of blooming as well...but i don't think they were very "mature" plants when i rec'd them.
i don't know the average time it takes to bloom with these...i would think it may vary depending on environment, cultivator...ect?
Most Alpinias bloom on second years growth.

Just a side note: when comparing 'Sunspice' just realize the initial introduction was vegetatively propagated and these (introduced by asiatica) were consistently variegated. Most of what you see now are from tissue culture and are much much more variable. Some may be almost all green, some heavily variegated etc. Some variegations are reliable when TCed others not. Haven't bloomed mine yet, but it's a beautiful species and one of the parents of A formosana.

How did yours fare this winter of 2011?
Well, they did great because they were all in the greenhouse :). I'm planting some out in different beds now. They were all too small to plant out last year. I have one of the original ones as well.

Oh that is cool, Tim! My son and I are planning a ginger and brug garden in my shaded area of the woods that were cleared out when Hurricane Ike came roaring thru. We had to dig up 75% of them up so the ground can be worked again..lol..it is easier to plant them than digging them up..lol..
Around here they grow like weeds, but, the 'locals' don't have the nice variegation that 'Sunspice' has.
The photo above is of A zerumbet variegated (shell Ginger). It's much more common in landscapes and grows much larger and taller. 'sunspice' is not nearly as widespread. Similar variegations though.
