Can anyone ID this squash?

Salt Point, NY(Zone 5a)

It was labeled "delicata" but doesn't look like it to me! I'm guessing that it is a winter squash and I can't tell when to pick it, either! Thanks.

You are right. It does not look like a delicata type. Sweet Dumpling which is considered to be delicata type does have that general shape, but is more white with green stripes. Check the blossom end. If it has a pronounced blossom scar it could be one of the buttercup types. All winter squash need to fully mature. Normally when the skin grows too hard to dent with a fingernail.

Thanks, Farmerdill. It does have a huge blossom scar...interesting! I'll check out the buttercup squashes.

It looks very similar to "Burgess Buttercup" pics on Dave's Garden Plant Files. Thanks for the help!!

Gardenfrances-- Did yours look anything like this when it was smaller? The one in picture is about size of golf ball. The vines are probably 8 ft long so far.

I can't remember if this particular one was a Burgess buttercup or a mini kabocha. My labels faded (just like my memory).

The Japanese kabocha is in the buttercup group.

Thanks for the help. The squash -when it was small- was just the same shape as it is now, just smaller! I'll look when it is light out to see if there are any small ones and take a pic. I've never heard of a kabocha/Japanese kabocha. I've got some reading to do!

Here's a picture of a "younger" one of mine. I was way off on what it looked like!

My Bon-Bon looks exactly like yours! I will try to get a photo when the lights turn on!
