I promised to post photos of the watermelons (Diablo) that are taking over my garden.

These guys have run together so much I have no idea what this is. Hopefully I'll be able to tell when it is ripe. It could be Yellow Doll....or Sugar Baby....or on of the European melons I was trying....

And here is the little donkey I have been taking time with. She is now out of the cattle pens, her momma is taking care of her, and she is very happy. She runs and jumps and bucks and just plain frollicks almost all her waking hours!

Here she is with her cousin, her grandmother, and her mother. They and rescue donkeys and they seem to be quite happy after two year with us.

And this is my little fig tree (Celeste) that got ripped out of the ground by a wicked storm this spring. All her companions disappeared into the night. But I replanted this one and it is doing well....I think....for a newbie anyway!

And, finally, Santo says it is time to go back inside and watch the World Cup! There will be chips!?!

Love all your critters! The 3rd melon pictures is not Sugar Baby, so that should narrow it down for you - lol...

Just harvested one of the Diablo watermelons this Sunday. I have to report that the flavor of the melon and the excellent diease resistance of the vines are as advertised. This watermelon was really, really good! =~P Could be due to the fact that this was our first watermelon of the season, but it was nice and sweet, juicy. Nice red crisp flesh. Not too big for just two people to devour in one sitting and have some left over for the chickens. All in all, I tried this watermelon because Texas A&M rated it as superior in a taste test and superior for ease of growth and production and I have to agree. I will grow it again next year.

Is it a hybrid?

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, it is a hybrid. I got the seeds from Willhite's, http://www.willhiteseed.com/index.php. I wanted to go OP, and do with most everything else. This one came with such high marks from Texas A&M that I just decided to try it. Willhite's is so generous with the amount of seed in the seed packet and the vines really produce so I think it was worth it. Next year though, I will definitely give this one way more space. Maybe it is just the weather this year but these vines are taking over! =8~ O I can't find my little rat terrier!

I like to go OP so I can save seeds. I enjoy sharing them.

Does anyone know what the shortest season melon is?
