Planting under a BIG spruce tree

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 5a)

Okay, I have a HUGE spruce tree in my front yard. I didn't plant it there and wouldn't have planted it where it is since it takes up at least 1/3 of the front yard. I don't want to chop it down just because I don't like it being planted where it is. So I've decided that next year I want to get some of those windsor wall stones to put around the base and plant some hostas and don't know what else. The area under the tree where I want to do this is about 4 feet across and the branches underneath have been cut off to about 3 feet up the trunk. It gets a tiny bit of sun first thing in the morning and again a tiny bit as the sun starts to go down. I want to plant some flowers that are bright and will accent the hostas. I had thought about planting some dwarf mums under their but not sure if that would work or not? Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Mums need sun so I doubt if that would work. You could always try one as an experiment. Plants can't read gardening books and will sometimes do what they're not supposed to. ;o)

Oh yeah, that's right! DUH! I should have known that one. Yeah, I've heard that before that plants don't always do what they are suppose to do.:D I might try one under their anyway.:o)
