Some critter ate one of my melons! So I covered the entire bed with bird netting. I was concerned at first that the bees would not be able to get in and out, but they don't seem to be bothered by it.
I'm keeping my eye on this "Athena", it should be ready any day.
Melons!
Here's the Melon bed. To the left you can see some bagged leaves. This is the last area that has Burmuda grass, which we hope to get out this fall/winter.
The melons are growing over some old carpet, which is helping to keep the Burmuda grass in check. Actually, the grass is growing through the carpet in places.
To the right is my tomato jungle, with a half row of green peppers.
That's a fig tree in the pot - they are supposed to taste like "Fig Newtons"
Behind the tree are some sweet potatoes - then our neighbor's yard.
This is the first year for us that the crape myrtles have bloomed!

What a pretty melon and what a pretty garden! How do you get the vines to stay so straight?? Mine just wander all over the place! LOL
VERY nice. That's another crop I've never been successful at growing. Perhaps I will try again next season.
HoneyBee - you have a lovely garden! I can feel myself itching to get my gloves on right now! (but I'm stuck in a cube typing away!)
my very first year of gardening i grew regular watermelons and cantalope. i kept picking the cantalope to early but i did get one 20 to 15 pound watermellon. the vines were all over the place so i stopped growing them.
stephanie - the melons are planted at the bottom of our slope/garden. As the vines grow, I just "encourage" them to grow down hill LOL
That large "Athena" in the photo has ripened, and been eaten. It was soooo juicy!
There's a Charantais sitting on my kitchen counter with hubby and my names on it for this evening's desert.
