Kohlrabi

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Should I be starting my seeds indoors for a fall crop of kohlrabi now, or is it still too early?

Also, can peas take a second crop for fall? I've never done that before, but it seems like I should be able to direct sow the seeds in early September, no?

Anything else I can plant out when I pull my cabbage and peas up? Would Okra take at this point or have I missed the boat on that?

One more question, which should probably have it's own thread, when do you pick the seed pods on the cabbage? Do they need to dry on the plants?

1. probably about right for NYS. I direct sow last of August here.
2. don't know, Can't do it here because by the time it cools enough for pea vines to grow days are too short. Vines will stand a decent freeze, pods and blossoms are susceptible, so you need to plan for harvest before freeze or as I do plant late and overwinter for early spring harvest.
3. Okra needs heat and a long season. You may have time for snap beans or squash. all kinds of brassicas can go in fairly late.
4. Yes or reasonably so. Once brassica seed heads are full and visibly appear to half dry They can be cut and placed/hung in a dry protected are to finish drying

As always, you are a storehouse of knowledge! Thank you so much for resonding.

I grew Kolibre Kohrabi this year for the first time and I am sooo in love with it that I dread the thought of being without it! I will get some seeds started pronto!

Peas - I was thinking temp and sunshine, didn't take into consideration the day length. Duh! Glad I asked and a pro answered!

The photos I've attached are the seed-heads, correct? (I know - I'm a dunce. I usually pull before letting my "stuff" go to seed, but the Chinese cabbage surpised me! I didn't know it was even ready - then it was seed. It wasVERY tasty, though, so I definitely want to get the seed-saving right so it can become a garden staple for me. (Can this be grown a a fall crop?)

I have the worst time with brassicas. Have never been able to grow them well. I'm guess I get them out too late in Spring. This year I was given flats of Brussel Sprouts, Wnterbore Kale (which did great) and Cauliflower. I also sowed seeds for Falstaff BS. NONE of them did squat! They are still sitting out there looking stupid. If I can keep them alive, and they don't go to seed, will they take off when it cools down, or should I just give up and pull them out?
