I have about 25 seedlings of a hardy hibiscus from the plant across the street. I think the bloom is white with pink or red. I'll know as soon as it blooms, but my sister says she remembers its mostly white.
Questions:
# 1 will the seedlings be the same color as the momma?
# 2 I need to transplant the seedlings, they are 6 - 8 inches tall. What size
pot should I transplant into?
# 3 How soon can I expect to see flowers?
# 4 Should I use any special soil?
Questions??
I'm sorry no one wanted to answer my questions. I guess I'll just wait and find out for myself.
Wish I could help you, but my knowledge is very limited with hardy hibiscus. They're not a type that is grown in South Florida. Just the tropical types are grown here.
I only grow tropicals too, but I'll take a stab at your questions.
1) will they come true? I wouldn't count on it, although they may end up close to it. If the original plant was a hybrid, they don't typically come true from seed. Or if there were multiple colors growing near the one you got the seeds from, they could have crossed with each other. They mostly come in red/white/pink though so it's a pretty safe bet the flowers will be somewhere in that range.
2) pot size: hard to say without seeing the seedlings--it's generally best to go up one pot size at a time as the plant grows, so I'd put them in something that's a little bit bigger than what they're in now. So if they're in cell packs or something very small now, I'd go up to maybe a 4" pot. Or if they're in a 4", go to 6", etc. Then as they get even larger you can go up another size, etc.
3) when they will flower: Most likely not until next year
4) soil? should be fine with whatever soil-less potting mix you typically use for your containers.
Thanks! I'll keep trying.
