We saw this bird while canoeing in a small lake (about 90 acres) in North Austin (central Texas). Sorry about the poor quality photo, but this was taken with my iPhone. I had no zoom, but it let us get very close before taking off. Just from looking in my iBird Explorer South ap, all I could come up with was Tricolored Heron, but it seems a little out of its usual range.
