Help with Peas Please

Lake, MI

I am new to veggie gardening and I could use some help.

Can you plant peas in the fall? I bought some yesterday and woman that sold them to me (bulk) said that I could plant them now. I am thinking the weather will be to warm. I thought when the pole beans are done I could plant the peas there?

Thanks for your help

Hopefully someone from your area will chime in. Certainly here fall English peas are probalamatic. They will not do well in 100 degree weather which holds until September and while the growing vine can tolerate temperatures in the low twenties, the blossoms and pods are susceptible to a heavy frost. I envision Michigan as cool in the summer, so if you get them started early enough to make a crop before a hard frost you would be ok.

Where is Lake, MI? If we knew we could figure out which zone you are in. I am in zone 5b.

Lake is near Cadillac Michigan. I am in zone 5.

Charlotte, NC(Zone 7b)

Our local tv gardening show said peas do not do well during the fall here in zone 7B because they don't like warm soil - which could explain why I could not get mine to grow taller than six inches last fall!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I think it depends what kind of peas. English peas need cooler, field peas like hotter. And there's arange of varieties within those broad categories, of course.

I'm "English" and the ones I tried growing were actually "French" (I think)
