Yellow leaves on squash

Winston Salem, NC

I have seen many different answers to the problem of yellowing leaves on squash, zucchini and pumpkins. Is it a need for more nitrogen, more water or what. We have lots of these three crops at our Food Bank Garden, maybe 200 plants, and I would say that 1/3 have yellowing leaves. I've removed those that have squash vine borer. Your thoughts?

I just heard in a workshop that you can put a band of tin foil around the base of the seedling and this will deter the squash borer. Has anyone tried this, and, if so, did it work?

If you don't see any evidence of critters on the plants with the yellowing leaves, it could be overwatering or a lack of some nutrient...

I have heard the tin foil thing. I have never tried it as I have never had a problem with SVBs - I think I plant early enough that they would be a minimal problem if they ever came. My vines would be done anyways. I have heard that it works, but you also have to wrap the stem below the soil line. Easier to do if you are setting out transplants - not so easy if you direct seed like I do. The moth lays the eggs usually at the base of the stem and when they hatch they immediately bore into the stem to do their dirty work. Logically it makes sense. They would not be able to bore through the foil.
