Every year a couple of Sparrows nest right outside our front door in the column. Every year they have to rebuild their nests due to humans (not us) or crows. Every year they realize I'm not going to hurt them when I wait for them to feed their babies before opening doors or walking up the stairs.
Our birding started last winter/spring. It began with a seed feeder my neighbor gave us. Then next came the 3 tube seed feeder and the hummingbird feeder. Now we have a new simply feeder, two suet blocks and a better (easier to clean) hummingbird feeder with a planter full of nectar flowers.
The bird visitors have increased and are now varied. We started with a couple House Sparrows, including the ones that were nesting.
This is my list of what we have visiting now:
House Sparrows
House Finches (I love the males colorings!)
Purple Finches (I believe we have two males visiting because their coloring is different than the House's red)
Towhees
Flickers
Steller Jays (and their babies!!)
Chickadees (and their babies!! Added pictures of two babies trying to mooch off an adult)
Junco
Orioles
A parrot (that one seriously threw me off!!)
Gold Finch
Robin youngsters
1 crow ... who is now traumatized by the sight of my small girl cat running face first into the window.
Annas Hummingbird
Rufous Hummingbird
Black Chinned Hummingbird
And some new visitors I haven't been able to identify because my son has misplaced my guide book to Washington birds. There are several different species too.
Deck Birding
Nice shots tikipod! That a good list of birds you have visiting.
Cute photos and a great list of birds. I'm jealous that you're seeing the Chickadees and they're not here!
Wow! Three kinds of Hummingbirds. Hum, jealous, yes. I'm pretty sure your parrot is an escapee. In New Orleans proper (south of Lake Ponchartrain) there were many Monk Parakeets that had escaped their owners and were busy procreating and having a great life. But I think N.O. is a 9b zone. I am guessing that your area is a little frigid in the winter for Parots/Parakeets to survive. Hopefully, a more experienced Parrot person is reading this thrad and can offer informed advice.
Nice collection of birds. Liked the composite, too.
Hack
This wouldn't be the first escapee who has wandered into our area.
Years ago a lovebird landed on our neighbors patio and they had me check it out since they knew we had birds. It just hopped on my finger and I brought him home, we kept it for around 6 months before we found the owner.
Last year I saw a cockatiel sitting on the pool fence and a smallish parrot flying around, the parrot landed on our deck once but neither were friendly enough to approach.
I haven't seen it in a little while, I hoping it's ok.
