Limping Guinea

Spiro, OK(Zone 7a)

I was sweeping the girls into the coop tonight (yep, I use a broom - don't even have to touch them, but it makes them run in the right direction), when I noticed one of our two female guineas was limping. Bravely, even though I had on a sleeveless shirt and no gloves, I picked her up to see if I could see something obvious. She was flapping a bit, but I couldn't find anything obvious. She didn't seem to have pain in any specific area that I touched.

She's basically got what I assume is the bad leg splayed out to the outside of her body while the other is positioned normally. He kind of hobbles, trying not to put weight on the splayed leg.

I don't know what it could be. They just started laying, so perhaps there's some relationship there? I really can't afford to take her to the vet - they're my MIL's birds, so perhaps she could do it. I don't know - is it possible she just pulled something and it will heal itself?

Eileen that is a very good question, I had a chicken, young pullet two months old having the same problem. She had to flap her wings to help her along and it concerned me. I left it alone and today about two weeks later she is no longer limping. I don't know what the answer is but sometimes if left alone they heal up very nicely...Hay

You might ask Catsy, but it sounds like a mild case of Mareck's to me.

How old are they? After 5 months they usually are safe from contracting Marek's, although if they were infected as chicks, they might show symptoms later under stress.

If it is splayed out sideways, that may not be Marek's. Although as the leg weakens it might go out to the side.

In classic Marek's, one leg goes foreward and eventually the other goes back, I think to compensate. They sort of dip to one side and stumble a lot. They don't seem to be in any pain.

In any event there is nothing you can do for it, so I'm with Hat - watch and see how she does.

Interesting thread on guineas and Marek's. Sounds like it is not usually a problem.
