Can you ID this tree?

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

There is a small to medium tree in the edge of the dirt road across from our little ranch that bloomed at the same time as our peach tree. It looks a lot like a peach tree, but the blooms were a little darker pink. There are no other trees like it anywhere around.

I looked more closely at the small fruit, and it is not a peach. There's no fuzz at all. The fruits are about 1" long now. DH dug into the fruit and found a small, round, dark seed, nothing like a peach pit at all.

Any ideas?

Hickory.

Thanks, Ken. We're researching now to see which one as neither of us has seen a hickory tree before. Evidently there are several different hickories that may occur naturally in Central Texas.
