First firing ever temperature/kiln sitter question

Odessa, FL

I ran the kiln today, used the kiln sitter with a small regular cone in it as recommended in my book. I also have a pyrometer that we had installed, and I was trying to keep an eye on the temperature as it went along.

Someone stopped by and I didn't make it out to see the kiln sitter in action, but the kiln was already off and it appeared the temperature was on the way down, but I'm not sure if it was 30 seconds or 5 minutes. Not any longer I don't think. I have a feeling the temperature didn't go all the way to cone 6, but I'm not sure. If it didn't I can fire again, but I was wondering if any of you use a kiln sitter, and if so, how much you adjust where the cone sits on the supports. Is it just a matter of trial and error until you figure it out? Or should I camp out in a chair out there to keep an eye on it and see the actual reading at the moment it turns the kiln off?

***Edited to say I did find a manual online, so hopefully I'll be able to figure this thing out!

It's still too hot to open, around 850°, and waiting is driving me nuts! I want to see if my glaze melted correctly!
