Hi all.
I have a question. When I "crate trained" my 10 yr old long haired Chihuahua, when I got her at 3 months of age, her breeder sold me a crate, I put her in it and every night thereafter I put her in it. I didn't use it for house breaking her. We now have another puppy, a Maltipoo. She's only 7 weeks old. She came home in a crate also, but whined for about 10 minutes at first. That night, she didn't want to go into the crate, but I got her in and all she did was whine. She wouldn't stop. Unfortunately, I took her out of the crate and into our bed. My husband took her and our other dog out around 5am. The next night was a repeat. It was about the same time when my husband was again taking both dogs outside and when he came back inside, he told me it looked like she'd peed on the comforter. sigh. So, last night, I was bound and determined to keep with the crate training over night. My husband would get her when he got home from work and take her outside and put her back into the crate. We didn't get that far. She was quiet until my daughter came up to bed at 1am, then the whining started. I took her outside and she did nothing. I was out with her for 10 min. I put her back in and the whining started again. She doesn't just whine, it's loud crying and yelping too. Like she's in pain. She's not in pain, I could make her be in pain☺..lol....so anyway, I brought her downstairs and she continued to whine and cry and carry on. I don't know if she stopped or if I was so exhausted I fell asleep. I heard her again around 5am and my husband was home by now, so he took both dogs out. He brought her crate upstairs, but she continued to whine and cry. He got her out and into the bed she came. This can't continue when she's not potty trained. What are we doing wrong? I've read online that crate training is for potty training and to basically keep then in the crate all day! I didn't do that with Zoey (10 yr old), and I'm not doing it with Abby! BTW, Zoey still sleeps in her crate at night and travels in it also.
I hope this makes sense. It sounds like I'm having my husband do it all, I know. My doctor changed my medicine, so to say I'm loopy is putting it mildly. Bad timing to get another puppy.
