can't grow radishes!!

Port Sanilac, MI

For years, we have had a vegetable garden and radishes were certainly one of the easiest plants. Last year, there were no radishes on the plants but we blamed it on being too cold. This year we have the same thing. Two different kinds. Leaves look normal but all there is is root (not excessive), no bulb. This year we watered good and had nice weather (not too hot). It is very frustrating to not even be able to grow radishes! Any suggestins?

I had the same problem (or similar) 2 years running and finally gave up! I was told it was probably bolting from the heat, but I didn't think it was tht hot at the time.

Hope you get a better answer than I did. I'll be listening in as I used to LOVE my garden radishes. First up...immediate gratification and all that!

Are you growing one particular variety or a mix? Have you been sowing the same variety each time? Maybe it's just the variety you are planting. I have observed that when growing mixed seed packets you get some that don't form. Since I am not sure what variety isn't forming, the mixed packages are good because I am guaranteed something at least! Otherwise have no clue what is causing the problem. Could it be over fertilization which promotes the leaves? Just a guess!

In my case, I was growing several varieties, but Cherry Belle was among them - and I have always grown that one 'cause it's fast and easy!

Yes, Cherry Belle has been more reliable for me as well. This year the radishes did well for me but I had problems the last two years also. Last year I couldn't start them until after the middle of May so they did bolt, producing nothing to eat. This year I started them in April. I wish they weren't so sensitive to heat because they are on my companion list as being ideal planted around squash to deter borers and around cucumbers against the cucumber beetle. But I guess in those cases it is the leaves that do the deterring and one just accepts the fact you won't get anything to eat!

Cherry Belle was one of the ones I planted. They aren't going to seed (Bolt?), just aren't forming. DH says he's going to give up too, but I hate to give in.

Maybe try again later in the summer like late August when the weather gets cooler?

Late August when the weather gets COOLER???

Saylorsburg, PA(Zone 6a)

Well early September then! In PA the nights usually start to cool down a bit here so I figured in MI it would start getting cooler late August too. We are told to start fall plantings of spinach, etc. in late August here. After the middle of Sept. late tomatoes don't ripen well. Don't know the zone in Port Sanilac, MI so maybe I goofed!! Wrong assumption! But you get the general idea, right!! LOL

Oh, hey - I was just internalizing! Late August in this area is insufferable! Icky-poo! It's around that time I start sulking and whining about moving from Florida for THIS! Whaaaaa!
