What is this?

I was at the Houston Arboretum and saw this six foot flowering beauty. They had a sample inside with a table tent saying purple coneflower but there was another flower in a vase right next to it that didn't have an ID and it was the purple coneflower that I know. Is this another version? I really loved it. Thanks.

I think it's basketflower, Centaurea americana . Six foot is definitely on the towering end of the range; mine even this year are more like 2. They're real easy to grow from seed, and attractive to butterflies, and supposedly dry well, so knock yourself out...

Yes, Basket flower, I love those too but don't have much luck with growing them.

Centaurea americana, but definitely on steroids! I have seen them growing wild here, but never more than 2 feet tall. Beautiful!

Hello Pat, good to see you posting here.

Thanks everyone. Good to know that they aren't usually that tall. For the top picture, I had to hold the camera over my head as high as I could!
