Have - Colchicum "The Giant"

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Freshly dug, Giant Autumn Crocus. These are totally different than the spring type crocus. They grow leaves all spring and are just now going dormant. The leaves dry off in summer and in the fall up pops these huge stalks with big showy flower heads. Very easy to grow, no special care at all.

Would like to trade them for anything on my want list. Also looking for miniature evergreens (Conifers or Daphne) or rock garden type things for planting in hyper tufa troughs.

Thanks for explaining that the leaves dry off. I planted some last year and watched in dismay as the lush greenery just dryed up and withered to nothing recently.

So it does the same thing as the naked ladies with its foliage?

Yea!!! Now I will watch that patch and the areas where my naked ladies are hiding and come fall I will have a double surprise!

Hi Dawn, yes, they are bulbs and just like the Amaryllis Belladonna (aka: Naked Ladies) they do their growing while the winter rains are still around and during summer, their natural dry period, they dry up and take a long summer siesta. These are things that require no summer water at all. Quite adapted to the Medierranean type Climate. Your Lycoris radiata - Spider Lilies (also referred to as Naked Ladies) will do the same thing.
