ropical plants - in Chicago?

Bolingbrook, IL(Zone 5a)

I once heard of someone in zone 5 that had a tropical looking garden - huge plants and exotic leaves, etc. Since then I have wanted to do that but I would need some guidance. I have had Elephant Ears which grew in a pot so I just brought it to the garage every winter. Sorry I cannot tell yu the proper name - old habits die hard , expecially when you are as lazy as I am. Today I recieved a fan type palm tree that is supposed to survive ok in zone 5 so I will put it in a large pot and see how well it does. I wonder if there are any plants that look tropical for this zone. If anyone has information or better yet if you have tried this I would love to hear about it.
