espescia culture and care

Longboat Key, FL(Zone 9b)

So now I have a couple of Espiscia's: Do all of them need to be in terrarium? Can I put more than one into the same container?

I bought this spag. moss mix put out by Miracle Grow. Is this the medium i use in the terrarium?

All help and suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi There;
The only epescia's that usually need terrium conditions are the pink ones, like cleo etc. Otherwise they can be grown like your other gessies.They do like spag. moss so should be fine,

do you have a light stand? Or are you growing in natural light? you can do both. I find my streps & violets do very well in natural light althou i do have a few light stands & do grow there also. Do you have other gessies?

No light stand now here in Fl. But lots of warmth and humidity outside. I'll try outside in deep shade. Most concern is the growing medium/soil. Also fertilizer, when, what and etc. ? Helene

You might try growing columneas, aeschynanthus and nematanthus. I find them a LOT easier to grow than AVs. I haven't had the nerve to try espicias yet. I live in the high desert of S. California. VERY low humidity! So I don't think espicias would do well here. But being in FL, you might have a lot of luck with them. I think they are beautiful and would love to grow them. I use Dyna-Gro Foliage-Pro 9-3-6 on all my houseplants once a month, in spring and summer. According to Al (Tapla) it is good for everything, including cacti and succulents.

Thanks for your input.
Yes we have humidity, but also it gets very hot and I notice the AV growing tight centers al of a sudden. I have to take them out of the sun. We keep the ac at 78 degrees. that should be ok. but they cannot be in sunlight as it is too warm.
Espiscia is outside for now ---- it's all an experiment and therefore, your comments trigger more awareness.I have one Esp. here for 5 days underglass inside where it does get some sun. Man it is taking off like a bullet in it's environment. Helene

Yes, the pink ones love containers. The others can be grown in very light soil. Perlite, peat moss etc.
