I'm not actually looking to identify a bird but wasn't sure which forum would be best for my question!
I had hung a finch sock in my yard but the chipmunks had a field day on it and tore holes into it so my regular finch food would just fall right out.
I went looking for a more sturdy type of finch food feeder and found a combo seed/thistle feeder. Since I already have a bag of regular seed (not thistle), I wanted to try setting it for thistle seed but putting the regular seed (which is still pretty small) in it so the chipmunks can't get at it (don't worry, they're not going hungry - they're eating the wild bird seed from another feeder - LOL!). Has anyone tried this? Do you think the finches will be able to get the seed?
Regular finch food in thistle feeder?
Hi mcbc, Th Bird Watching Forum http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/birdwatching/all/ would be the right place for this question.
If the seed is like sunflower seed they will eat it but I'm not sure it will fit through a thistle setting on the feeder.
Thanks, Pelletory! I did find a couple finches perched on the feeder and the seed has gone down so they're getting something! However, I also noticed a lot of the seed falling onto the base so I'm wondering if they're having a hard time getting it out AND "catching it" in their beaks so I'm going to change it back to the regular slots this weekend and see how it goes.
