daylilly-lady.
It's a Musa acuminata. AKA Sumatrana.
Common name Bloodleaf or Rojo.

Here is a pic. of my Siam Ruby.
I like the Rojos as much as the Rubys.

naaaaaaaaaaaahhh...it may be a cousin...but the actual siam ruby is more like this... she's just beginning to get her color...she came completely green.

i listed the lab tissue sample i purchased on the other forum for you to see it as well...it's not as spotted....more like an ae ae variegation....but please correct me if i'm wrong...

Thanks Jerry and tobee43. I know I now have a Rojo, but can either of you tell me what the baby banana is that I posted next to this one?? I ask Tropicman to take a look see, but have not heard anything from him yet. I will take help from anyone in the know!!!!
When I looked through the different threads and pictures I was suspicious this big one was not a Siam Ruby, then when I got this new one this week, I thought I better get my ducks (names) in a row! I would appreciate help from anyone in the know!!!!

ok...now which post is the baby...this is not the baby...this is the beauty...lol!! the other one i think i could be a siam...but it needs some time to get it's color??? but i'm not sure so tropicman most likely knows...

Clinton, MO

I am still waiting for tropicman.....or anyone else, with the correct answer!!! :)
Your "I think" is not a final answer I take it. :)

I got my Siam Rubys from a nurseryman and grower in Fl.
I saw him at a plant trade show in Dallas last august. I asked him about them some times reverting back to all or mostly green. He said it was because it got too cold in my greenhouse.I had some solid green ones but by end of the summer they had produced pups that where back to their ruby color.
Never had any problems with Rojos. I had them planted in the ground out side for 8 years ( not in a greenhouse ) but they finally died out, but i'am going to get some more. Jerry

texasbigleaves or tobee43 - dumb question. How do you pronounce "Rojo"? Does the j have the "h" sound or is it pronounced just like it is written? I went to plant files and it had the pronunciation for the Sumatrana but not the Rojo.

groveland, FL(Zone 9b)

i'm awful in spanish...however it's more the H sounds....like the actual word red in spanish..which that is what rojo is..LOL....in spanish most all the "j"s are pronounced like an "H". hope that helps!

Clinton, MO

tobee43 - Yes, that does it. I figured that was how you pronounced it, but again could find nothing to verify. I just wanted to say it correctly when someone ask me what it was!

Thanks for all your help!

groveland, FL(Zone 9b)

well...really my husband helped because he lived in spain for 4 years...i can't really speak a word!! but you're very welcome!!

Dallas, TX

Your right.I pronounce as ROHO. Which i think means red.
What ever the Roho and Siam rubys are beautiful and great to have in any tropical garden! Jerry

Jerry is right,

Daylily_lady's plant is Musa acuminata. It's commonly known synonyms are Musa sumatrana and Musa zebrina.

'Siam Ruby' is a cultivar of the plant, with exceptionally red leaves!

Musa acuminata is a parent of all edible hybrid Bananas.

Hawaiians refer to Musa acuminata as Mai'a O'a. It is considered a sacred plant.
It was used in Hawai'i medicinally and as a sacrament.
