treating seeds in the oven
Well? What is the answer???
and what are you treating them for?
Yeah, really. The only seeds I have treated in the oven were being cooked.
paracelsus, thank you - I was afraid I was the only one in the dark about this!
HERBIE!!!! Where are you?????
sorry - have been out. a person on another site i visit asked this question. i checked on the internet and found www.jhudsonseed.net
quote
Dry Heat: The seeds are baked dry in an oven at 140° to 220°F for 4 - 10 hours, or are microwaved for 30 seconds to 4 minutes. Gives erratic results.

sorry it took me so long to get back
Herbie, your link is missing the "s"

What were you trying to do?
Well, a few years ago I read a Russian study about using the microwave to stimulate germination in some perennial seeds, but I never tried it. Sounded too much like seed torture. But some other treatments can be really harsh, so I don't know. I wonder if the oven treatment is supposed to duplicate fire germination. But then I always thought it was the chemicals from the fire rather than the heat itself that stimulated germination in those types of seeds.
The most drastic treatment I use is soaking a recalcitrant seed in refrigerated water that is changed for fresh every day for two or three weeks. This is supposed to imitate snowmelt, and it does speed up some seeds' germination, like belladonna or mandrake. But I have only used it for perennials that in nature go through a winter before germinating. I can't imagine a vegetable seed needing any such finagling.
bolino - i don't understand. when i click onto it from my post it brings me to the site.
I don't know what the problem is but when I click your link it brings up a search page that has among the results the link I put in my post.
