Calla Question

Clinton, MO

For the first time this year I have planted Callas. The foliage is beautiful, the blooms are beautiful, but some of the bloom stalks want to droop. What do they need? They are in shade in the morning and only get mid/late afternoon sun. Do they need more sun? I keep them moist. What should I be doing??

They might be in too much shade. Do the bloom stalks droop all the time, or just after the flowers have been blooming for a while? When the blooms start to form seed pods often the weight of the seed pods makes the bloom stalks bend over.
If the plants are in too much shade, they grow a little taller and skinnier, and the flowers will bend over as the stem is not sturdy enough to support them.

You can wait until they start to die back in fall, then dig them up and move them to a better spot.

lakersidecallas - I bet I have them in too much shade. I have them in pots so it would be easy to move them. They do not get sun until mid-afternoon. Should they be in full sun or just more sun than what I have them in??

Wow, that looks pretty! I could sit in that chair all day!

It depends on how hot your sun is there. You don't want them to get too hot in their pots, either. I personally feel morning sun up until about 1pm is best for potted Callas.

DIRTYGIRL71 - I am not an expert as this is the first year I have had the callas in pots, have always thought they were beautiful, but just never ventured to grow them in numbers. Several years ago I planted 2 or 3 bulbs in the ground and lost all but one. I never did dig it, it comes up every year, but it has not bloomed since either. I need to dig it this year and move it to a pot since I have these others. We use dehydrated chicken manure on/in everything, from the yard to the flower beds, to the garden, to the pots. I am presuming yours is in the ground, do they eventually dig themselves deeper and therefore are now too deep to bloom?? I don't know if this is even true, but I have heard that about different bulbs doing that. Are they too shaded?? I bet one thing lakesidecallas could tell you. I will be interested to know what her/his response is.

I had them in a pot until this spring, I put them in the ground, so I doubt they have dug in deeper...I'll just have to give them some more time...thanks

I'm a she!
Too much shade can lead to lower blooms. You might also dig them up this fall, dry them, and separate the bulbs into smaller bulbs.

Looks like it's leaning into the light. It would not surprise me if you get more from it if you move it. I like to turn the container to avoid the leaning look.

You can expect them to need as much light as oriental lilies. (There's a lily in the container with the callas.)
