it looks like young tomatoes, but no, that can't be. their almost ready to dig, and I saw this tonight.
WHAT is this on my potato plant?
is it growing over the tater mound? or laying on it? or did you dig them up ?

Kathy--some potatoes form seed pods that look just like small tomatoes. I'm 99% sure that's what you're seeing here.
and not edible...
Yep - they are seeds and don't eat them - they are toxic...
Yes, they are seed pods. I have them on some of my potatoes. And I don't think it makes sense to plant them as tatters are grown from seed potatoes or slips in the case of sweet potatoes.
Yes, they're seed pods. Potatoes and tomatoes are quite close relatives, which is why they're both susceptible to the same species of blight. However they're too far apart to actually cross. There is in fact a particular sub class of tomatoes such as Yellow Perfection, Stupice, Brandywine and Tamina which are commonly known as "potato leaved tomatoes". They mostly have the characteristic of being early and quick maturing; so they're particularly suitable for areas with a short growing season, such as here.
