It's not that I am tired of posting bluebird pictures, although I sometimes worry that some of you may be. It's just that a pair of tree swallows (TRES) has decided to nest in the spare nest box I keep handy for when I have a house sparrow problem. This particular box is mounted on a steel rod with a foot much like that of a shepherd's hook, which makes it handy to move when needed. Anyway, last Fall I had stuck it in the ground in our big daylily bed hoping the chickadees might nest in it. Instead the TRES found it and have built a nest. They have been in and out of it for a week and today I discovered the first egg. Although they seem concerned about the loud clicks of my camera's shutter, they are not shy and will let you walk up to within a few feet of them I have gotten some pretty good pictures (both of the mom and the pop separately, and in flight and mating on the fence). In the next few weeks I hope to get some nice colorful shots with them among the daylilies (there are more than 50 plants in that bed and some of the stalks are already almost as tall as the nest box.)
Watching a Tree Swallow nest
Oh Dave that is great!!! Congratulations! Be sure to keep us posted. Wonderful shots!
Terrific !!!
Keep up the great photo work!
What a great bird to have nesting close to your blooms. Our last Tree Swallows finally fledged so we quickly took down the houses before the HOSP started a new family. Now I'll get to enjoy your beautiful photos of them. I can't believe you were able to get such a fantastic in-flight picture! These birds move so quickly, it's next to impossible to get a catch like this-well done.
By the way, I'm not ever going to get tired of seeing your bb photos!!
I'm so happy to see you share those beautiful pics. of the Tree Swallow newly wed. :-) Gorgeous pics. Dave, thank you.
They are such lovely birds!
Nice catch! :-)
Ditto what Pelle said-they're so beautiful with the wings spread out.
Really nice Dave, I agree with duc for the flight shots.
Great shots Dave!!
Great photos once again Dave. I'm glad that one flew close to you, that's why I adore my birds so much. That long lens really captured the inflight beautifully! I think the reason I wasn't able to get many photos like that was that I was too close to the house or birds (they were just 4-5ft away. Next year I'll sit farther back and hope I've paid attention and learned something from you.
Wonderful shots Dave! I love the second one. I love the way these birds open their mouths so wide. They are such beauties!
LOL Thanks Dave! Great shots. I love the rich color too.
Yes, that blue is indeed amazing.
Love that open mouth! That blue is so pretty too. Great pictures Dave.
Could this wind up being your second favorite bird Dave? I would love to have them nest here.
Nice one!!
Jeepers!
I just love that wingspan photo!
Well done!
