I love the flavor of black currants and want to grow several because they have tiny enough seeds to be eaten raw (or poached) without seeding - unlike red currants which are also delicious but have big seeds. However, my past experience with black currants has been the stems drooping and twisting and acting more like woody vines than shrubs.
I seem to remember visiting a "pick-your-own" farm in England where the currants were trellised. but I've seen nothing in garden lit. about that. Have any of you grown black currants? Grown them or seen them grown on trellises?

Growing black currants
Sharon, I am British. I grew up in Cornwall, and we had black currant bushes. I don't remember ever trellising them, or doing anything special to get them to grow.
I do remember eating them, and they were very sweet.
Maybe there are some gardening web sites in Britain that you could access for some help.
I have 2 black currant bushes here in WV. They are bush form. I believe the cultivar is Ben Sarek. I seem to have them too shaded to grow much, though. I love black currant jam!
