I just put about 16 1 inch goldfish in my new pond. Yesterday. Today I noticed a pretty large bull frog in the pond. Of course I knew they would come, but I hoped not til the fish were bigger. I am worried he will eat my goldies?? What do I do? Already tried to catch it w a net, but the booger is way too slick, pun intended :)
PLEASE help!!
I don't know Frilly, I sure hope someone that's had bull frogs can help! Have you seen him eating any fish yet??
well my water is very dirty and brownish, so I can't 'see' anything!
If I feed them, some of them come up, but as they are new, I don't know one from another or anything. I did see some minnows swimming this morning, so I guess those are still there. He is still there, I really don't like him. He plops in the water and startles me!
Then he bobs around at the surface watching me with only his eyes sticking out, I think he's kinda creepy!
I've never had a bullfrog, or any frog that I know of, for that matter. I do know that when I had a "harmless" garter snake I was ok with him for a bit until he started eating my fish...so I totally understand where you're coming from. Still no luck catching him?
no way! he's a fast little snot!
Hardly lets me see him.
Bullfrogs will definately eat your comets if they can catch them. My sis lost a oranda goldfish to a bullfrog...of course they are slower than a comet. Also, a friend had one of her bullfrogs eat another of her bullfrogs. They've also been known to eat birds.
As long as your comets have places to hide they should be okay and once their larger bullfrog won't be able to bother them.
well I was thinking of putting a light out by the pond, maybe that would attract bugs and the frog will eat those and not bother my fishies so much?
Would a solar light be ok?
I have solar lights all over my back yard and by the ponds. The reflection with the water ripples has kept down the herons, they can't see under the water at night. Try it!
We put in bullfrog tadpoles this past Spring. I am hoping they eat the koi babies (I know how that sounds). Every year we seem to be inundated with koi fry and they are difficult to catch. My koi are larger, so I am not concerned about them eating my koi. I know my koi have had at least one spawning so far and I have other koi that seem to be getting fat with eggs.....
