not a hummer but...

Wells, TX(Zone 8b)

I was out in my garden to day and I thought I saw a hummer but it was the tinyest one Id ever seen .. it was about the size of a 50cent piece..as I slowly moved closer it turned out it was what I call a hummer moth.. I dont know the correct name.. it was busy feeding at my alstomeria blossoms and it was so cool.. I didnt have a camera with me so no pics ... it had beautful yellow and black marking on the wings, moving just like a hummer would.. Ive seen them before but not this small... are there more than one type??? it was just so dainty. I love finding new visitors at my flowers.. makes all the work worth while!!!

Is this what you saw, if so its a Humming Bird moth? I have many of them this year for some reason.

I've been seeing those this year, too. Then yesterday something even huger, with a red thorax and more of a wasp-shaped body.

I'm still really short of bees and butterflies. Plenty of blooms, but the insect population still hasn't picked up. I've noticed a lot of variety in the butterflies, but only one or two of each.

Tent caterpillars in the mulberry tree, I guess that's something...

Here is an ID chart, maybe it will help. http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/gallery?f=30&_st=1

I see them occasionally and since they move so fast and those wings never stop it is hard to identify them. They are neat little buggers :)
