very likely columnaris, not heterophyllas

This image here on the heterophylla page http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/62154/
is of the same plant photo'd at he top of this thread.
The needles and branching structure look the same as this other photo on the same page: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/283269/
As opposed to this photo on the columnaris page of the needles and branching structure: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/171446/
which I think is very different. The needles are shorter, the appearance almost looks braided. The whole branchlet does not have the triangular shape that mine or the other photos on the heterophylla page has.

What are you seeing different?

close up like that the two are near impossible to tell apart, and perhaps that has been part of the problem. It is not until A heterophylla begins to grow up past a 3-6' in height is it become very clear it is not the same plant.. not only that, it is known as heterophylla as that means changing foliage... as a young plant its foliage is different (same as A columnaris, unfortunately), but this change becomes apparent in mature trees (which unfortunately I have super close up photos of), and primarily of the higher branches. While the foliage of A columnaris stays constant from top to bottom basically. A heterophylla foliage becomes more robust and less flexible... but they still looks very similar close up in their needle morphology. but in your photo there at the top of this page, you can see already how closely spaced the branches are... that NEVER happens in a heterophylla of that height.. they would 3-4x farther apart and the branchlets would never be flatly oriented or drooping... always pointing straight up towards the sky.

Okay, I'll send in a report on the photos.
