Maximum depth of an effective wicking chamber?

Pine Island, FL(Zone 10a)

I've got some 24"-30" tall decorative pots I want to convert to self watering (a bit if a misnomer, btw). I'll plant them with annuals for the most part, and don't really need the soil depth these things have. I seem to recall reading that capillary action in sub-irrigating planters will only work for something like 6", so making a reservoir much deeper than that isn't a good thing. Is this correct? I'd like a make the reservoirs & wicking chambers about 12" deep. Anyone know?

Thank you!

Crestview, FL

Seems like I've seen them with bigger wicking chambers than that as in the colander, that is definately bigger than 6"?

Go ahead and convert one, and let us know if it's working...if it doesn't wick up adequately at that depth (12") , you can always get a tube of plumbers silicon seal, plug up that hole, and redrill it lower...
