Like pbtxlady, I am looking for a small flowering tree, specifically a redbud. I've heard of a new cultivar called "Little Woody (or Woodie)", and was wondering if anyone in my zone has had any experience with it or any others of a similar size. I have a small yard, and the fact that it only reaches about 9' at maturity appeals to me.
Availability of dwarf redbud
Will it even grow down there? I grew up in San Antonio and never saw a redbud tree til I moved north.
I don't know about that particular dwarf variety since it looks like it came from eastern redbud, but yeah, mexican redbuds grow all the way into, you know, mexico. The Texas ones are fine here, so I'd expect them to manage in San Antonio. They're understory trees, so maybe wouldn't be happiest stuck out in the middle of a bare sunny yard. It also can be a problem if you get stock from back east, used to more acidic soil, and dump the poor things into our limestone.
I think if I had a small yard, I'd be inclined to get a full size redbud, then as it got taller prune off the bottom limbs. So I sort of would be making the yard bigger by using the vertical space - the pretty flowers and leaves would be up high, and then I'd still have space at ground level, either for more plants or for my hammock.
